Will watched Killoran leap back, reaching for the weapon at his waist, but he was much too slow about it. Noah smashed into him and twisted him over his shoulder, sending him flying. Killoran landed awkwardly and tried to roll to his feet, but Noah had already turned and lunged back. These were tricks he’d learned from Tai, Will knew. He’d been practicing with her in the academy. The days of Tai not being allowed to train with the other assassins was long over, and with it the idea that she couldn’t defend herself. She was the warrior among them, but she’d clearly been showing Noah some advanced tips.

Noah stood up, a triumphant look on his face. He had Killoran’s rifle—his rifle—in his hand, pointing it at him. “We’re not going anywhere.”

Killoran wiped blood from his lip and stood. “Now the real Bellamy is coming out. This was what I was trying to say, Zeke.”

“Shut up,” Noah said. “Just shut up for a minute, you bloviating asshole.”

Will shook his head. “He’s losing his mind,” he said matter-of-factly to Noah. “He keeps calling me Zeke.”

“Well, the ship seems to think you’re him and I’m Bellamy, so who the hell knows?”

Will shook his head, trying to figure out how to explain it. “I don’t think it’s that,” he said. “I can’t explain it. The ship understands we aren’t exactly Bellamy and Lattimore, but it’s almost like it doesn’t care. It just wants it to be us. It’s like—” Will realized what he wanted to say, but he almost couldn’t bring himself to say it. Finally he said, “It’s like it’s lonely.”

Noah gave Will a glance that said that maybe he thought was he was losing his mind, too. “It’s lonely?”

Killoran snorted as he sat up. His busted lip was already swelling. “It’s not like that, Zeke.”

“Stop calling me that,” Will snapped.

Killoran paused. “The ship is an empty vessel, because we lobotomized it.”

“What does that mean?”

“We took the mind out of it.”

Noah frowned, but Will’s eyes grew big as saucers. “Elixr,” he gasped.

“Very good, Zeke.” Killoran smiled. There was blood on his white teeth.

Noah whipped his head around, stunned. “What’s he talking about?”

Will shook his head. “I felt like there used to be something more here. Like there was a vacuum, and the ship was trying to fill it. That’s because there is. It did have a central mind—Elixr. They took it out of this ship to put it in the one that went to get the cure.”

“It wasn’t my idea,” Killoran said. “Bellamy was the one who wanted to do it. It allowed him to justify not destroying our baby.” He shrugged. “To ease his conscience.”

Noah was shaking his head. “I’m still trying to—”

The panel next to the door that Killoran had come in turned red. The doors slid open. Two men in combat uniforms stood on either side of Tai, holding both her arms. Behind her, two more men were holding Seelah.

“My Lord,” said a small man with a lisp, whom Noah knew instantly as Lex.
